Annotation – The report gives an overview of road traffic safety level in Latvia and compares it with that in the countries of EU, analyses the main causes of road accidents, analyses the impact of implemented measures on road traffic safety, shows the speed impact on road safety and consequences of accidents, as well as analyses different measures of EU for decreasing of speed on roads.

Annotation - First National Road Traffic Safety Program in Latvia was adopted by Cabinet of Ministers in 2000. The article analyzes results of program implementation within time period 2000 – 2005 and gives detailed look on the most effective measures in Latvian circumstances. Cost-benefit ratio of program implementation is good – 1,7. However it has to be mentioned that financing of program was carried out only by 63% and defined goals are partly achieved.

Annotation - Road traffic safety problem in all the Baltic States is still of high priority in spite of some progress during the last years. This paper presents statistic figures characterizing levels, differences and common features, trends, experience and achievements in road safety management in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. There is a comparison of different ways chosen by transport policy makers for improvement of traffic safety in each state and explanation of positive trend,gained by each of them.
